I love walking around this neighborhood. Montmartre used to be a farming area and later became a haven for painters and artists like Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Renoir. As I walk up towards Abbesses metro station, I end up at the exit right in the middle of the market, surrounded by small chalets and the smells of roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate, and freshly baked treats.

Why is Montmartre such a special neighborhood to visit during Christmas?
For me, it feels intimate, warm, and lively. The narrow streets, little staircases, and hidden squares invite you to wander and look around. This is exactly where a Christmas market belongs: not neon-lit supermarkets, but small chalets with handmade products, artisanal treats, and local specialties. It always gives me that true Parisian feeling of coziness that I love during this time of year.
What is there to see and do at Place des Abbesses?
Place des Abbesses is the beating heart of this market. The square is surrounded by charming Parisian buildings, cozy cafés, and the iconic art nouveau metro entrance. I like to take a moment here to relax: I sip a mulled wine or hot chocolate, chat with the vendors, and enjoy the gentle bustle around me. It’s a place where locals meet and the slow passage of the day can really be felt. The square is close to the “Je t’aime” monument and the house where Vincent van Gogh lived, so art and history are always within reach.

What can you buy at the Christmas Market Abbesses Montmartre?
I always buy my sweet treats here, to support this cute Christmas market. In addition, the approximately 18 chalets offer handmade jewelry, wool scarves, local porcelain, and delicious treats like macarons, pretzels, roasted chestnuts, tartiflette, and champagne. The market invites slow browsing and picking out gifts. It reminds me of the markets in my home town, as it always makes me pause and enjoy the simple pleasure of craftsmanship and coziness. Visiting here during the Christmas season has become my little tradition whenever I come to Montmartre.
