Archeosite parc de la Haute-Île: history and nature in Neuilly-sur-Marne

Nestled in the natural landscapes of Neuilly-sur-Marne, the Archeosite at Parc de la Haute-Île offers a rare combination of outdoor adventure, historical discovery, and family-friendly exploration. Unlike Paris’ classic formal gardens, this park immerses visitors in riverside paths, open fields, and themed areas where history comes alive. From the fascinating Danubian house to interactive educational displays, the Archeosite is perfect for anyone curious about archaeology, early human settlements, and life in the Neolithic era.

Riverside path: a relaxing start to your walk

Today I felt the need to escape into nature while also stimulating my mind. I wandered along the river in Neuilly-sur-Marne, following a path that promised calm and a change of scenery from the usual city parks. The walk along the canal is longer, but far more enjoyable than the direct route.

In the parc, families were enjoying picnics, children were running across the grass, and the park had a natural charm that reminded me that not all green spaces need to be formal gardens like Jardin du Luxembourg or Parc Monceau.

Curious to see a part of the park I had only known from photographs, I ventured deeper into the Archeosite parc de la Haute-Île. This area is dedicated to discovering human history and sharing archaeological knowledge, with engaging activities for all ages.

Danubian house

I was particularly intrigued by the displays showing how people constructed buildings in ancient times, including the partial reconstruction of the famous Danubian house. This model, inspired by an archaeological site discovered at Vignely along the Marne, gives a sense of the rectangular layout and post-supported structure typical of early Neolithic settlements across central and western Europe. Small huts scattered around the area help illustrate daily life, with a clear focus on educational experiences for children.

Seeing the reconstruction made history tangible, allowing you to picture how people once lived, while still enjoying the natural surroundings.

The Archeosite features photo displays about the excavations conducted for the 2024 Olympic Games. These presentations offer fascinating insights into the Gaulish and Gallo-Roman vestiges uncovered, showing how people lived.

It’s a unique combination of historical discovery set within a natural park, making it both intellectually stimulating and visually appealing.

Adress: 220 Avenue Jean Jaurès à Neuilly-sur-Marne

From Paris, take the train to Neuilly-Plaisance. From there, you can walk along the canal starting at Porte de Plaisance, a pleasant route of about 30 minutes with scenic views. Alternatively, a shorter walk begins at Pointe de Gournay, near Cedeo and the Super-U gas station. The park entrance here may look like private property, but the sign on the right leads into the park.

From this point, it’s roughly a 15-minute walk to the Archeosite. Once there, you’ll find open fields, small paths, and thematic areas perfect for children. Educational booklets with games and activities make the visit fun and informative.

Go see it for yourself, and let the park’s blend of nature and history surprise you.
