Today, November 5, 2024, is an important day for the United States. Voters are heading to the polls to decide who will lead the future of their country. While Americans cast their votes, let’s turn our attention to a unique tradition that originated at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, where a special “fake vote” has been held since 1924.
Harry’s New York Bar: a hidden gem in Paris
Harry’s New York Bar opened its doors on November 26, 1911, on the American holiday of Thanksgiving. This iconic establishment was literally moved from 7th Avenue in Manhattan to rue Daunou in Paris. It’s not just about a beautiful mahogany bar, polished by countless patrons; it also marks the rise of a new cocktail culture in Europe.
The bar was introduced by Toad Sloan, an American jockey, who had the idea to bring this bar to Paris. He asked the famous bartender Harry MacElhone to take over, and thus the bar received its current name. The early years of the twentieth century marked the beginning of a new legend.

The tradition of the alternative vote
Since 1924, Harry’s New York Bar has hosted an alternative voting procedure for Americans during elections. This “straw vote” invites visitors to cast their ballots, and the bar shares the results with patrons. Over the past 87 years, it has mispredicted the outcome only twice, establishing itself as a reliable gauge of visitor sentiment. On election night, guests flock to the bar to watch the results unfold and dive into lively discussions about the political future of the United States.
The origin of the Bloody Mary
Did you know that Paris is the birthplace of the Bloody Mary? Harry’s Bar’s greatest contributions to cocktail culture is the creation of the Bloody Mary. Bartender Ferdinand “Pete” Petiot invented this famous cocktail in the 1920s. Initially called “The Bucket of Blood,” it was later renamed Bloody Mary, possibly in tribute to actress Mary Pickford or the historical figure Mary I of England. This cocktail, made with vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, and various spices, has since become a favorite for brunches and social gatherings.
The innovative spirit of Harry’s Bar
Harry’s Bar is renowned for its creative approach to cocktails. Over the years, the bar has invented several classics, including the Sidecar, Blue Lagoon, and White Lady. The bar remains true to its heritage of inventiveness by regularly developing new cocktails that often find their way back to Paris, depending on the trends and preferences of its diverse clientele.

The intimate atmosphere of the piano bar
A visit to Harry’s Bar is not complete without descending a few steps to experience the unique ambiance of the piano bar. Here, cocktails and music come together in an intimate setting with dim lighting. This space, formerly known as the “Front Page Cabaret,” has welcomed many jazz legends and is where George Gershwin composed his iconic “American in Paris.”
