As I sit down to pen down my thoughts, my mind drifts back to those idyllic moments spent in Place des Vosges Paris.
There’s something magical about picnicking beneath the shade of lush trees, feeling the warmth of the sun in spring and fall, and sharing delightful bites.
Architecture and surroundings
Place des Vosges is the oldest square in Paris, Built by Henri IV from 1605 to 1612. Situated in the Marais district, located on the border between the 3rd and 4th arrondissement, it’s one of the five royal squares in Paris, although no royal family has ever lived there. The square was often a meeting place for the nobility. Known for its stunning architectural unity, all buildings surrounding the square boast uniform red-brick facades and steep slate roofs, creating a picturesque setting.
Victor Hugo
One of the square’s most famous residents was the renowned author Victor Hugo, who lived at number 6 from 1832 to 1848. His time in the square inspired his literary works, adding to the area’s cultural significance.
Originally named Place Royale, the square underwent a name change in 1800 to honor the Vosges department, which was the first to contribute taxes during the French Revolution. This change was a symbolic gesture, reflecting the region’s early support for revolutionary ideals.
Secret tunnel for clandestine meetings
Legend has it that a secret tunnel exists beneath Place des Vosges, rumored to have been used for clandestine meetings and escapes during times of political unrest. While its existence remains unverified, it adds to the square’s mystique and intrigue.
Filming location
Place des Vosges has also served as a filming location for several notable films, including “Les Misérables” (2012) and “The Bourne Identity” (2002), further cementing its status as an iconic Parisian landmark.
Picnic at Place des Vosges
Place des Vosges is one of the ‘Trésors de Paris’, tucked away in the bustling cityscape. It’s the kind of place where memories are made. A picturesque fountain stands as the centerpiece.
We often picnic here and each of us brings something special to share. From fresh baguettes to delicious cheeses, fruits, wine, the spread is a true testament to the culinary artistry of Paris.
And this is one of the places where we also organize our wine tastings among friends.
And there’s a different kind of magic when you decide to go solo. You find a quiet spot on one of the inviting benches..
