The Christmas manger in the renovated Notre Dame: A magical experience
Notre Dame is finally open again! After years of painstaking renovations following the devastating fire in 2019, the cathedral now welcomes visitors once more. I had the privilege of stepping inside this iconic Paris landmark the day after its grand reopening. And today, on Christmas Eve, I’m sharing my visit with you: a tour of the renewed Notre Dame and the breathtaking crèche de Noël displayed within its sacred walls.
Touring the Notre Dame in Paris
The anticipation was palpable as I joined the line, ticket in hand, for my chance to enter Notre Dame. Despite the chilly Parisian weather, there was excitement in the air. Pilgrims and groups of nuns from all over the world had gathered outside this magnificent cathedral on Île de la Cité.
Finally, I crossed the threshold and was met with an awe-inspiring sight. The creamy white interior bathed in light from the stained-glass windows felt both grand and serene. It was a powerful reminder of what this cathedral has endured.
The fire on April 15, 2019, destroyed the roof and its iconic spire, but Notre Dame’s heart remained. Now, fully restored, this masterpiece dedicated to the Virgin Mary once again shines as one of Paris’s greatest treasures.
The Napolitan Crèche de Noël: A masterpiece
As I walked through the majestic nave, my eyes were drawn to the golden gates to the left of the altar. Behind them stood the most extraordinary Christmas manger I have ever seen.
This crèche de Noël is a Napolitan masterpiece from the 18th century, composed of 150 figurines collected by the late Alberto Ravaglioli. Created by master artisans Sinno and Biagio Roscigno, the manger is a faithful homage to traditional Neapolitan craftsmanship.
Why the manger at Eglise La Madeleine near Concorde will surprise you
The display depicts three key scenes from the Gospel: the Nativity, featuring a hut framed by the ruins of a pagan temple to symbolize Christianity’s triumph; the announcement to the shepherds, with radiant angels illuminating the sky; and the innkeeper refusing shelter to Mary and Joseph. Surrounding these biblical moments is a vibrant snapshot of daily life in 18th-century Naples.
The level of detail is simply breathtaking. Each figurine is a work of art, from the vivid colors to the intricate expressions on their faces. Everywhere you look, there’s something happening, and together, the scenes weave a rich tapestry of the Christmas story. This is, without a doubt, the most compelling and lifelike representation of the Nativity I’ve ever encountered.
A unique moment at the Notre Dame
In the video I created, you’ll see that I had the rare privilege of being the first to walk through the golden gates that day. Despite the bustling crowds outside, I found myself alone in the stillness of the crèche. It was an unforgettable moment—a day in Paris with a golden glow that I’ll cherish forever.
The music accompanying the video is by the talented Sebastian Valentine, whose melodies perfectly complement the serene visuals.
