A cave on a bridge, that’s the new art installation in Paris. With La Caverne du Pont Neuf, the surprising history of Paris becomes an experience for all your senses. But just before opening day, a storm tore the inflatable cave open. Fortunately, it is now open again.

Did You know Paris was underwater millions of years ago?
Did you know that a massive ocean covered the entire Paris area? This region was called the Bassin parisien (Paris Basin). It’s a large geological basin that covers nearly all of Northern France. The basin is named after Paris, which sits geographically near its center.
The ocean deposited pieces of limestone, minerals, and animal and plant remains. Over millions of years, these layers became thick and hard , forming limestone.
What does the Paris Bassin mean for Paris today?
The Pont Neuf (built 1578–1607) was constructed using limestone from the Bassin parisien. Not just the Pont Neuf , but also the Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Pantheon, and thousands of other buildings are all made from the same stone.
Why did JR create La Caverne du Pont Neuf?
La Caverne du Pont Neuf (The Cave of Pont Neuf) transforms the bridge back into a natural cave, as if the stones are returning to their original state.
It’s also a tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who wrapped the Pont Neuf in fabric in 1985. Forty years later, JR reverses their approach: instead of covering the bridge, he returns it to what it originally was, a limestone formation.
It’s impressive to see such a massive art installation appear in the city again.

What does La Caverne du Pont Neuf look like?
I saw a massive white-gray “cave” completely enveloping the bridge. This is La Caverne du Pont Neuf – an inflatable artwork 120 meters long, 20 meters wide, up to 18 meters high, weighing only 5 tons (lightweight inflatable material).
I visited the bridge. From other bridges and the Seine banks, the cave becomes visible and grows larger as you approach it. It’s a white inflatable structure with all kinds of points and shapes. A fabric stretched over it features realistic rock formations.
From a distance, it looks like the bridge is being swallowed by a natural rock formation.Visitors were supposed to walk through from the bridge down to the banks below, as if entering another world. The installation is designed to create dramatic effects at night through lighting on the rock structures.

Inside you’ll hear them music by Thomas Bangalter (former Daft Punk member) – an electroacoustic soundscape

JR is a French street artist from Paris, known for massive black-and-white portraits he installs life-size on buildings throughout the world.
Storm damaged La Caverne du Pont Neuf but is now open again
On the afternoon of June 2, 2026, unusually strong wind gusts hit La Caverne du Pont Neuf during installation, tearing the outer fabric along its edges. The 18-meter-high inflatable section partially deflated. The mountain landscape layer flapped violently in the wind.
A technical assessment confirmed the damage was caused by this exceptional weather event, with three localized areas of the inflatable structure affected. Thanks to its compartmentalized design and built-in safety systems, the impact remained contained.

Is the cave repaired?
Yes, and it is open again. The fabric is restored in a workshop before being reinstalled, a complex process given the scale of the artwork
It is absolutely worth the visit and ot’s genuinely beautiful.
