Our Provins daytrip began with a relaxing train ride from Paris. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by a picturesque landscape that immediately immersed us in a medieval fairy tale. The walk from the train station to the centre is an experience in itself, full of scenic views, charming waterfalls, and beautiful houses that showcase the unique style of Provins. This style is characterized by half-timbered houses with wooden beams and stone walls, giving them a rustic and charming appearance.
Though this Provins day trip near Paris is popular among tourists, it has managed to retain its authentic character. The streets are lined with shops dedicated to roses and honey, two symbols deeply rooted in the town’s history. The rose is an important symbol in Provins because of the legend that the town was famous for its rose water in the Middle Ages, traded as a luxury product. A visit to the upper town cemetery added an intriguing historical element to our trip. Here, we found graves of various contemporaries from the First Empire, and the graves of Félix Bourquelot (1815-1868) and Pierre Lebrun (1785-1873), a French poet and playwright who was retired by Napoleon. The cemetery also groups the graves of soldiers who perished in the four hospitals and infirmaries where the wounded from the front were cared for.
